Bugg and Shugg
It was early evening and Bugg turned off the engine of his airboat. The boat settled in the water and drifted gently into a wall of sawgrass. It was beginning to occur to him that the roar of the aircraft prop engine was probably scaring away the critters he was trying to hunt. He did enjoy the sensation of skating over all sorts of terrain, over shallow water, over mud, over patches of dry land, and over the occasional kayaker or two. Maybe his older brother, Shugg, was a better hunter because he didnât use an airboat.
Bugg Spencer had been overshadowed by Shugg his entire life. Shugg was bigger, meaner, and more talented at catching and killing critters. Shugg was a little bit smarter, but in their world that didnât matter. Bugg had always lost to his older brother when wrestling and fist-fighting, except the time that Bugg brained him with a two-by-four. Bugg caught fewer gators and pythons. And had fewer wivesâjust two while Shugg had been on his third.
All those years of rivalry. All the attempts to win the affection of their fishing-guide father who ran boatloads of drugs through the Ten Thousand Islands. Until he got locked up and died in jail from a freak accident involving his mullet haircut and an industrial laundry machine. All those years of believing he hated his older brother, and now he was as weepy as a little girl.
Bugg missed Shugg more than ever. He was determined to avenge his brotherâs death. How he was going to find the exact python that strangled his brother didnât matter. All he knew was that the Burmese python species was going to pay the price.
Then there was the strange lizard his brother had photographed and had obviously distracted him enough to let down his guard with the snake. There was a big price on the head of this lizard. Bonnard, the man who had pretended to be a journalist and was actually a private detective, promised heâd give him twenty grand for the lizard dead, fifty grand alive. That was enough for a kickass new pickup truck.
He detected movement in the corner of his eye. It was the S-curve of a large, swimming snake. A python. He pulled his Smith & Wesson from the back of his jeans and prepared to send the python to Hell.
